For Roman Catholics, today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the forty days before Easter (Sundays are not counted). This is a time of fasting and prayer. The predominant color is purple.

Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent, and Mardi Gras-the carnival atmosphere which "rings out" the pre-Lenten season, ended yesterday, Feb. 24.
